Castles, brown bears, salt mines and one very good road

Nearly everything in Romania is a day trip. The question is how long a day.

Which Dracula’s Castle run also stops at Peleș. What the Slănic salt mine costs once the transfer is in. Reviews of every tour you can book in Romania.

Four castles, four different days

Bran gets the vampire. Peleș gets the interiors.

Every castle day out of Bucharest or Brașov is some combination of these four. What each one is actually for, and the cheapest way through the gate.

What Romania actually books

The days out more travellers take than anything else in Romania.

The top of this list is the same three castles over and over, sold by different operators. What changes is the group size, the pickup point and about twenty dollars.

Past the last town

The Carpathians begin an hour off the motorway.

Rescued brown bears in oak woodland above Zărnești, a dusk hide in the beech forest, and a road that climbs to two thousand metres and then closes for eight months. This is the half of the country the castle coaches drive straight past.

Pick a base

Bucharest is where you land. Brașov is where you should sleep.

Six towns with enough on the doorstep to fill the days you have. The capital for the Parliament and the boulevards, Brașov for the castles, Sinaia for Peleș, Sibiu and Cluj for the two sides of Transylvania, Timișoara for the Habsburg squares.

What a day costs here

Romania stays cheap until you hire the car and the driver.

Every tour on the site sorted by what it costs a head. Half of them come in under eighty dollars, the famous castle run among them.

Under $50

Old-town walks, museum and Parliament tickets, and the big coach day to the three castles.

$50 to $120

The comfortable version: small-group castle days, the salt mine, wine evenings, the mountain road.

$120 and up

Private drivers, the long loop west to Corvin and Turda, wildlife hides and the Danube Delta.

Fix these before you fly

Four things here run on somebody else’s calendar.

Most of Romania can be arranged the night before over a beer in the old town. These four cannot. Two close on days you would not expect, one is shut for most of the year, and one wants your passport at the door.

  1. 01Palace of Parliament Tickets and Guided TourYou only get in on a guided pass, and the desk asks for the passport or ID card the booking was made with. Arriving without it ends the visit at the door.
  2. 02Peleș Castle Tour with An Expert GuidePeleș closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, and again for maintenance through most of November. On those days the three-castle trip quietly becomes a two-castle trip.
  3. 03Small-group max 7 – Top Gear Road – Transfăgărăşan HighwayThe high section of the road opens around the start of July and shuts at the beginning of November. Outside that window the barriers are down and the day goes somewhere else.
  4. 04Peles Castle, Bran Castle, & Brasov Old Town TourThe last week of October is the busiest of the year at Bran, when half of Europe wants Dracula’s Castle for Halloween. Take an early slot or take another week.
December to March

What is still open once the mountain road shuts.

Romanian winter closes the high passes, empties the castle courtyards and drops Bucharest below freezing. It also hands you the indoor half of the country: a salt mine that sits at twelve degrees whatever the month, a thermal dome under glass on the edge of the city, and a communist capital that reads better in the cold.
